SEO
Also known as: Search Engine Optimization, SEO Optimization, Search Engine Marketing
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the practice of improving the visibility and overall performance of websites and web pages in search engine results pages (SERPs). The goal of SEO is to increase the quantity and quality of traffic from unpaid (organic) search results rather than paid advertising. SEO applies to multiple search formats, including web, image, video, news, academic, and more.
How SEO Works
SEO involves a combination of technical, on-page, and off-page strategies. Technical SEO focuses on the infrastructure of a website, ensuring it is easily crawlable and indexable by search engines. This includes optimizing site speed, mobile-friendliness, and secure connections (HTTPS). On-page SEO involves optimizing individual web pages by improving content quality, using relevant keywords, and ensuring proper meta tags. Off-page SEO refers to activities outside of your website that impact your rankings, such as backlinks from other reputable sites.
A simplified analogy for SEO is a library catalog system. Just as a library uses a catalog to organize books and make them easy to find, search engines use algorithms to organize and rank web pages. SEO helps your website "get listed" in the right categories and appear at the top of search results.
Example of SEO in Action
Consider a small e-commerce store selling organic skincare products. To improve its visibility, the store implements the following SEO strategies:
- Keyword Research: They identify high-traffic keywords like "organic skincare" and "natural face cream" using tools like Google Keyword Planner.
- On-Page Optimization: They optimize product pages with relevant keywords in titles, meta descriptions, and content. For example, a product page for a "natural face cream" includes the keyword in the title tag and meta description.
- Technical SEO: They ensure their website loads quickly (under 2 seconds) and is mobile-friendly. They also use HTTPS to secure their site.
- Backlink Building: They collaborate with beauty bloggers to feature their products, earning backlinks from high-authority sites.
When You Use SEO / When You Don't
Use SEO if you want to:
- Increase organic traffic to your website.
- Improve your website's visibility in search results.
- Build long-term credibility and trust with your audience.
- You're looking for immediate results (SEO is a long-term strategy).
- Your website has poor technical quality or content.
- You're focused solely on paid advertising.
